Fairies and Fusiliers Robert Graves 9780615802862 Books

This small volume is mostly poetry from Graves' experience as a soldier in WWI. Readers of his autobiography, Goodbye to All That, will recognize some of the incidents that find their way into poems. Very much worth a read, for fans of poetry of that era, for classicists (Graves was himself a scholar of the Classics, and this is a strong influence in his poetry), and for WWI history buffs.

....childhood innocence, juxtaposed with the horrors of World War I. Graves wrote many of these poems while he was serving his country during World War I. Like his compatriots and friends, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, Graves clearly understood the toll that the war took upon young men of his generation. For instance, in "The Next War" he writes of young boys playfully acting out soldier games. "Have they warned you how games end?" The yearning for a return to childhood, when hope abounded, when as a child he must have played in open fields and swam in lakes and rivers. Obviously these dreams came to a crashing end during World War I. Poems like "A Dead Boche", "To Lucasta On Going to War-For the Fourth Time" and many others speak to the almost unendurable horrors of trench warfare. Like the title suggests, poems like "Mr. Philospher" or "A Pinch of Salt" speak to a time before war, a time of innocence. Lines like "Dreams are like a bird that mock, flirting the feathers of his tail." Every generation seems to produce poets who come of age during wartime, but England during World War I produced an amazing amount of poetry and poets.
some poems are good, many too rhymy and not to much purpose.
The war poems memoralizing dead comrades are the best.
Gift for my husband. He really likes it.
This is a book of poems based on war or on fairy tales. Some of them were pretty good, but all of them were very strange. Also, the stories all had weird little twists to them, for example, it's not the story of David and Goliath as we know it, but rather one where David loses (not that all the stories are religious or Biblically based). One good thing that I noticed is that the poems about war tend to adapt a negative attitude towards it, so...maybe you can influence kids to be against war by reading them this book of really, really weird poems? I don't know.

There is an active table of contents, but it is a chart-style one, and you cannot see the whole thing on the kindle screen, rendering it only about 50% useful. Illustrations are lacking, although I'm not positive they were there to begin with.

There are 45 poems in this book, ranging in length from short to moderate.
Nice read in the true spirit of Robert Graves.
I enjoyed this book as I have been enjoying reading..The Greek Myths. My next purchase will be The White Goddess. Enjoy!
Graves is the best poet.
